Pupil Premium is a Government Grant.
Children eligible to receive this funding are in three groups:
- those entitled to free school meals or those who have received free school meals in the past 6 years,
- children in care or looked after
- and services children.
The Government believes that the Pupil Premium Grant, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most (DfE April 2012).
