Celebrating the first Mass of the academic year

We celebrated the first whole school Mass of the academic year with Fr. George. It was a joyous, reflective Mass and it was lovely to share the it with some parishioners and families. Our Year 6 pupils led the Mass, they read beautifully and altar served with reverence. Thank you everyone for your wonderful responses and fabulous singing

The Feast of the Nativity of Our Blessed Lady

Today we remembered the life of Mary, our Blessed Mother. The whole school celebrated the life of this great saint in many different ways.   Each class prayed to Mary, joined together for a collective worship and created some amazing artwork.

Year 6 Leaver's Mass

We had a beautiful mass at Our Lady of the Angels and St. Peter in Chains, led by Father George to celebrate our Year 6 class and their time here at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Primary School. We keep them in our prayers now and always.

Year 2 & Year 3 Liturgy

Y2 and Y3 joined together to celebrate with a liturgy for the feast day of their class saints, St. Peter and St. Paul. The children read beautifully and were reverent throughout. At the end, we discussed what we had learnt about these two amazing saints. Well done everyone!

CAFOD - Step up to the Plate
We welcomed Mr. Mayland from CAFOD into school to share the Step Up to the Plate Campaign with us.
He share information on the way the world grows and shares it’s food. We discussed that sometimes it is very unfair to families who live in the poorest countries, and people are hungry. Our next step is to create some artwork to join with CAFOD to raise awareness about this very important issue.
Thank you Mr. Mayland

The Good Shepherd Mass

Mrs Wiggins & Mrs McLernon-Evans took four representatives from school to attend the Good Shepherd Mass at St Holy Trinity . It was an opportunity to join together with other schools in the Diocese, to present Father Hudson's charity with our donation from school. The mass was led by Bishop Stephen Wright who thanked everyone for their donations. Children from different schools sang and read during the service. It was a special celebration of this wonderful charity.

The Crucifixion

Thank you to our Year 6 pupils who this morning led us in a solemn but beautiful liturgy - Jesus on his Journey to the Cross. The whole school reflected and paused on each of the Stations - to think about our own lives and how we can each carry on through even the most challenging and difficult times - just as Jesus did

The Garden of Gethsemane

Year 4 and Year 5 continued our journey of Holy Week today. They reminded the whole school of the Agony in the Garden during some of Jesus' last moments in The Garden of Gethsemane. They described through words, actions and song the bravery Jesus showed at this time.

 The Last Supper

Year 3 continued our journey of Holy week by leading us in liturgy about The Last Supper. Through readings they told the events of Jesus the night before he died. They spoke the words that Jesus spoke, the words we hear at Mass. The children read beautifully and sang the hymn ‘A New Commandment’. It was a very reverent way to express the events of that last meal Jesus shared with his friends.

Palm Sunday Liturgy

Year 1 and 2 began the Holy Week liturgies with Palm Sunday. They re-enacted the story with a real life donkey. Despite the drizzly weather, KS1 read, acted and sang beautifully to portray this special event.

Support for Ukraine

Thank you to everybody who supported our Day for Ukraine. Everyone looked great dressed in blue and yellow, altogether, we raised £287.50. The children wrote their own prayers for peace thinking of all around the world who are currently suffering at this time. Each class also made a peace dove to place on their class prayer space.

 St. Patrick's Day

We celebrated St. Patrick's Day today, with pupils in St. Patrick's team wearing green. Our Year 6 pupils from St. Patrick's house led a wonderful assembly to the whole school this afternoon. Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!

St. David's Day

The Year 6 pupils from St. David's house, led an assembly on the life of this great saint. All children in St. David's team came to school wearing yellow today.

The Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas

We celebrated our patron Saint’s feast day by having a Mass in our school hall. It was wonderful to have Fr. Michael come to celebrate Mass with us on this glorious occasion. He helped us reflect on how we, as pupils of St Thomas Aquinas and children of God, can follow in the footsteps of St Thomas Aquinas. Thank you Fr. Michael, we hope you will come and visit us again soon.
St. Thomas Aquinas, pray for us.

The True Meaning of Christmas

During the Christmas season, we can easily find ourselves lost in the hustle and bustle of life. There is the possibility that the true meaning of Christmas could be missed. As part of our Christmas celebrations, each class learned about different Christmas traditions and practices and how they came to be part of the celebrations we have today. Some of the traditions we learned about were ‘The Candy Cane, The Christmas Tree, St. Nicholas, The Twelve Days of Christmas and the Christmas Pudding’. This was a fabulous morning and we hope that learning about these will become a tradition each Christmas here at St. Thomas Aquinas.

CAFOD Assembly

We were lucky to have Mr. Mayland our CAFOD volunteer come into school again. This time  delivered an assembly CAFOD’s World Gifts campaign, which raises money for specific items and projects around the world that make a tangible difference. Thank you once again Mr. Mayland.

 Celebrating the season of Advent

On the First of December the whole school celebrated the beginning of the season of Advent.  We learned about dual meaning of Advent: the countdown to Jesus’ birthday but also the anticipation of his second coming. We talked about how we need to be ready in our hearts and minds for when this day comes and therefore need to spend time this Advent strengthening our relationships with ourselves, each other and God through prayer and kindness. We took part in various activities writing prayers and poems, creating Advent wreaths and calendars. We all had a wonderful day.!

St. Andrew's Day

Thank you to the Year 6 pupils in St. Andrew's house for an insightful assembly on St Andrew. The St. Andrew's house team dressed in blue to celebrate the day.

Remembrance Day Celebrations

11th November was a special day of Remembrance at St. Thomas Aquinas with the whole school pausing at 11am to remember those who have died whilst serving others. We also remembered all our loved ones who have returned to God in Heaven. Year 6 led us in a beautiful assembly of remembrance, leading the school in prayer and reflection. We also held a Festival of Remembrance Exhibition of children's work in the School Hall. I am sure you will agree, their work is amazing.

Month of October Devoted to the Holy Rosary

Why is it Important to Pray the Rosary?

The rosary is a form of meditative prayer. It’s a reflection on the life, ministry, and death of Jesus and of His Blessed Mother.  For hundreds of years, it consisted only of the joyful, sorrowful, and glorious mysteries. St. John Paul II added the luminous mysteries to the Rosary in 2002. Mary has asked us to pray the Rosary in several apparitions, so it’s important that our children know how.

Praying the Rosary at Home

Ten:Ten have made their rosary resources available to families throughout the month of October.

Celebrating Our Lady's Birthday
We worked on a tribute to Our Mother Mary, celebrating her birthday on September 8th. Each phase looked at Mary from a different perspective, FS & KS1 made birthday cards, wrote prayers and poems about Mary. LKS2 researched and made posters about great women of the past and present. UKS2 researched the situation of women in the UK today.  Everyone has learned so much about Our Lady’s unconditional love for God and about her many life challenges. We pray that each day we can become more like Our Mother Mary.

Year 3 Class Mass

Year 3 were delighted to welcome Father George into school today to celebrate the first Mass in school after such a long time.  It was made even more special that they got to share in the Mass outside on the playground. During the Mass they prayed for all staff, pupils and the wider school community, they prayed especially for the pupils in Year 3 who will make their First Holy Communion in a few weeks’ time. The children read, responded and sang beautifully while showing reverence throughout the Mass. Thank you so much Father George for coming to celebrate this beautiful Mass with Year 3.

Alton Castle Day Retreat

The pupils Year 3 and Year 6 visited Alton Castle for a retreat to help prepare them for receiving their Sacraments.

The children participated in team building games, which emphasised the point that working together makes things easier than going it alone. Together we went through some Scripture and the Castle team members shared their own experiences of receiving the Sacraments.

Throughout the day the children were given time for meditation and reflection, helping them to see God in the world around them. A wonderful time was had by all.

St Thomas Aquinas Feast Day - 28th January 2021

Happy Feast Day everyone!

We all had a lovely day celebrating the Feast of St Thomas Aquinas.  Father Peter Weatherby very kindly prepared a pre-recorded Mass for us to share with all the children working at home and in school. Some of the children beautifully read the readings and bidding prayers and we all joined together in singing our school song.

We also had a delicious 'afternoon tea' style lunch to celebrate this wonderful day.

Celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany

His Grace, Archbishop Bernard, celebrated Mass at St. Chad’s on Wednesday for the Solemnity of the Epiphany. This Mass was celebrated in 'bubbles' at school and many of our children joined in to celebrate this joyous occasion.

Celebrating Mass

Despite the fact that we can't gather for Mass in our churches, many priests and bishops are broadcasting their Masses live online.

Please click here to find a list of parishes who are offering regular weekly Masses specifically aimed at primary schools and children at home.

Praying with your children at home

Prayer is fundamental to the life of our school and the children have many opportunities to pray together frequently throughout the school day.  It is important that the children continue to pray, especially during this difficult time, and that you come together as a family to pray.

Alton Castle

Year 3 and Year 6 enjoyed a fabulous retreat at Alton Castle to celebrate making the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and confirmation. During our visit we are able to take part in varied activities e.g. reflection, music, meditation, discussion groups, team building and prayer services.  We all had a fantastic day and thought it was an uplifting, spiritual and fun experience.

Vocations Week

The whole school participated in Vocations week.  Many people who came in witnessed their faith through their vocation, from school Eucharistic ministers to seminarians, school governors to priests. We met people who believe that their actions as a job allow them to bear witness to their faith. We learned that that all of us, even now, have a vocation, it is not something that happens in the future, but something that is taking place right at this very minute. It was a thoroughly enjoyable time and the children had the opportunity to really evaluate their purpose in life and think about their own future.

Confirmation

Congratulations to all our Year 6 pupils who celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday 9th June at Our Lady of the Angels & St. Peter in Chains. Thank you to Bishop David who confirmed the pupils. Thank you to Fr. George and everyone in the school and parish community who helped prepare the children for their special day.
