Welcome to Year 5's Class Page
Summer Term
A big thank you to Elsie for our Mental Health Champion Workshop and well done to Aysha in Year 5 for winning the 'Mental Health Champion of the class' award. We learnt lots about how to keep our minds healthy and how to look after ourselves.
We have had the privilege to have Stoke City Football Community teach us how to play cricket this half term. We have been practising our bowling, batting and fielding skills. Take a look!
In Science, we planned our own experiment in pairs to investigate the force of Friction. We used Newton Meters to measure the force and recorded our results to make conclusions.
Spring Term
To create our Easter Cards, we used watercolours to create a gradient effect and to portray feelings and mood during this holy time.
We had great fun during our inter-house superstars competition. Well done to St George's team for winning in Year 5! It was a close one!
We held a special class Liturgy for Lent which we planned and took part in. We made Lenten promises to place onto the prayer space.
We spent some time reflecting on our experience of lockdown and thought about people who were affected by the pandemic on National Reflection Day. We thought about those who may have lost loved ones and those who worked as key workers to support the country. We created yellow daffodils as a symbolism of thought for others.
We wanted to support the whole school event in thanking the NHS by completing '100 skips for Tom'. We aimed to raise awareness of our great thanks to the NHS for all of their hard work and bravery during the global pandemic. Thank you!
To celebrate British Science Week, Year 5 loved learning about the career of being a Midwife and linking it to our Science unit 'Animals Including Humans'. We had the task of creating a care plan for new 'mums to be'. Take a look at the different types of Scientific enquiry we were involved in.
We have had a fantastic practical week in Maths learning all about fractions. We used counters and Cuisenaire rods to help us to revise and consolidate our remote learning of this tricky topic.
Autumn Term
We had a lovely treat afternoon from Bee Active of a fun team games competition. Well done to St George's team for coming first place!
In the last week of term, we had a beautiful collective worship to celebrate 'Advent' which we planned and resourced all by ourselves.
In our Art lessons, we created Victorian themed Christmas cards using shading techniques, used a range of stitches to sew Christmas stocking decorations and also made wooden tree decorations in our outdoor learning lessons. Take a look at our wonderful creations!
During our Topic lessons with Mrs Alaimo, we took part in one of our class 'Extraordinary experiences' of a Victorian School Classroom. Because of lockdown, we brought the experience to the classroom for the children. Take a look...
We have been taking part in a series of 'Outdoor Learning Lessons' with the Peak District Survival School. In our sessions, we have focused on Forces, the evolution of hunting tools, Victorian archery and the Wright Brother's first sustained flight.
We planned and celebrated a lovely collective worship together as a class on the theme of Remembrance and Peace. We wrote prayers on poppies, each one dedicated to a soldier who died in the war. Take peace in looking at our worship photos.
Some of us have taken part in an exciting extra curricular club called 'Wild Play' which has included lots of outdoor learning including how to make fires, swinging hammocks and making the most out of the outdoor environment. Here's what we got up to...
To celebrate our class Saint and to link in with our RE lessons, we had a lovely collective worship together on 'St Francis and God's Creation'. We planned our collective worship together as a class, wrote Canticles and prayers to praise God for his wonderful creation and held a class competition to create a fact file about Saint Francis. Well done to Emily who was our winner!
In Science, we have been testing the properties of materials to see their usefulness. For example, we tested some to see if they were soluble, flexible or good conductors of electricity. Have a look at us working Scientifically...
In PE this term, we have been learning all about Hockey. We have developed skills in passing and dribbling and know the correct posture and form when holding a hockey stick. Take a look at our pictures.
As part of our extraordinary experiences, we had a class paper aeroplane competition. We wrote our worries about Covid-19 and coming back to school onto our planes and 'flew them away'...
